What determines success within a career - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / What determines success within a career - Introvert Whisperer What determines success within a career? What ultimately defines career success? Despite the cliché rewards reaped of success, each individual will have their own idea of what success is and how to achieve it. Success is largely personal and what one personâs idea of success is will differ from another personâs. Success is measured through various different means such as spiritual, emotional, physical, financial, etc. and these can all interconnect and contribute towards your career success. Being profoundly efficient in any of these, satisfied with your life path, emotionally stable and happy, etc. can determine whether or not you become successful in your career. Research has found that career success is often affected by these factors, even good social and working relationships and simple happiness can determine whether or not you are able to move forward. Ultimately, you need to determine your own idea of what success means to you and move forward in that direction once you are aware of the ways in which you succee d. Material and Financial Success So how high does money rank on your scale of importance? Cash is often a big motivator when it comes to moving forward in your career and many are holding out for that pay rise or promotion that will leave them swimming in even more cash (unless it has to go straight back out to the tax man). Money often does make the world go around, especially in business, as well as being a form of power to those who enjoy having lots of it. A large chunk of society will view success as earning a large pay cheque that leads to financial security and the ability to purchase and bask in a luxurious lifestyle. Some may simply enjoy being promoted and having authority over others, climbing the company ladder and getting to the top, which can lead to even more corporate success especially for all of those megalomaniacs lurking within your company. Spiritual Success For the more conscientious type, success may present itself in the form of knowledge and be experienced and wise in what you do. Being the center of knowledge can be extremely rewarding and earn a lot of respect in the workplace if you know what you are doing and you are the âgo-to-guyâ or gal. Being passionate about what you do is a reward in itself through being able to go to work every day, love your job and be able to learn more and more about the field you work in. High paid jobs that are soul destroying are not always worth it or bearable, even for a large amount of money. Being able to do a job you love for a minimal amount of money (or lots) can be a lot more satisfactory and better for your well-being too. Achieving the goals you set for yourself and surprising yourself through overcoming difficulties can be the biggest of achievements achieving itself. Emotional Success Sometimes all it can take is to let a colleague know they are doing a good job and you appreciate what they are doing. When employees work hard, they should be recognized, praised and rewarded for their contribution towards team success as this is positive reinforcement that will encourage them to continue to work just as hard. It also makes them feel appreciated by their employer, puts them in a great mood and inspires them to progress. Employees also need to feel socially involved and happy in their job and this means successfully integrating into the team, hosting regular team building days or activities and keeping conflict to a minimum. If there is any conflict, it is important to solve this effectively in order for teammates to understand each other and different styles and approaches to work in the work environment. Employees need to have a good relationship with both their co-workers and their boss as well as with other departments and sections of the business. Negative worki ng environments can be emotional vampires and will soon drive people away or end up making things worse. Health Success Health in the workplace is and should be a priority to most and encourages success in its own right. Health outside of work should be important enough but should be stressed, particularly in an office environment where everyone is sat down for most of the time. Staring at a screen and being idle for several hours of the day without taking breaks and stretching your legs or exercising can be extremely bad for you. You may risk developing DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) or risk straining your eyes. You may perhaps even have a high-risk job and your idea of success is remaining unharmed and healthy? Being healthy certainly does encourage success (and is a success within itself), keeping you fit, energetic and lively. The good thing about exercise is that it releases endorphins which increase positive brain activity, leading to a happier and more proactive workplace. Eating healthily along with exercise will also improve concentration and energy, giving you the necessary vitamins you need f or a healthy body and brain. Seeing as success appears in various different forms to different people, it is up to you to determine what it is that you would be proud to achieve and what you are prepared to do to get to that point in terms of your career. How can being an introvert benefit your career - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How can being an introvert benefit your career - Introvert Whisperer How can being an introvert benefit your career? Most extroverts believe that being an introvert is associated with lack of confidence or shyness. This is not true. In fact, being an introvert does not have to be associated with any negative trait but, is associated many positive ones. It is time to embrace your introvert nature with dignity and to understand how being one can actually be a boon for your career and life, in general. Introverts usually think better: It is a popular saying, âThe wiser you become, the lesser you speakâ. This is because wise men realise that thinking and observing can teach us much more than speaking does. Talking about shallow things can drain a lot of energy that could be utilized for other, more important tasks. Maybe thats the reason we have two ears and one mouth. Being an introvert enables us to access the thoughts and ideas that are lying deep inside our mind. The focus of introvert people is more on the inside than on the outside. Also, introverts think before they act, which is obviously very advantageous in many situations at work where we can not always make impulsive decisions. They also know patience better than others and are also able to concentrate better and for longer periods which is of great advantage in many careers. Some of the most successful people and biggest leaders have been introverts. Read the Biography of Mahatma Gandhi or Albert Einstein and you will know the perks of having inside-out kind of an approach. Introverts are Better Listeners: To reply effectively, it is very important to listen carefully. Introverts are less likely to interrupt others in a conversation and are more likely to listen well. In fact, they are world-class listeners. They listen not just to respond, but listening carefully is a way of showing respect and importance to the speaker. Everyone wants to be heard and they offer much-needed attention to peoples thoughts rather than trivial conversations. This is one big reason why introverts become great leaders because they listen to everyone and respect everybodys thoughts equally. They do not get attracted to meaningless conversations. Introverts are more self-aware: There is another saying âWho looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakensâ. Introverts take considerable time introspecting. This is sort of a recharge period for them because they get tired in the company of people. This is a great practice that makes introverts understand their problems and correct them. In any career, it is important to know where we are making errors and how can we avoid them. This is the best way to grow. The one who accepts his/her mistakes and works at improving them sees a dramatic improvement in their work. Introverts are Better Problem-Solvers: We know that the solutions to all our problems lie inside us, but not many of us have the courage to face the turbulence inside. An introvert is more likely to look on the inside for solutions since he/she depends on his/her mind for all the answers. While many, who find comfort in other peoples company, wave-off the thoughts which then get accumulated inside them. Also, patience is a key quality for problem-solving. Introverts would not add unimportant points to any conversation but speak after filtering their thoughts. This avoids confusion and solves the issues quickly. Therefore, their career paths are smoother and more sorted. Introverts are Better Writers: Usually, introverts are better writers. There are exceptions for sure and if you an extrovert it does not mean you cant be good at writing. But, introverts think very deeply and can address their deepest fear and love, with more clarity because they know the world inside their minds better. They talk to themselves regularly as well as observe the situations and people thoroughly. Also, writing enables them to pour their heart out while giving them space and time to filter their thoughts before expressing them. Introverts Do Quality Work: Introverts are more likely to take up work that they can commit too. This ensures they finish whatever tasks they take up at work and do that well. They believe in quality, be it work or relationships and will not do anything just for the sake of it or at surface-level. They believe in meaningful relationships where they can connect deeply. Their work will always be quality rather than quantity. They usually have a higher sense of perfectionism. Being an introvert is more of a blessing than a flaw. In fact, it is not a flaw at all. We must realise that the potential is latent in introverts but some qualities are exclusive to them that can help them have a bright career. Personal Branding starts with how well you speak about YOU. What are the Main Elements of Creative Writing
What are the Main Elements of Creative Writing The Crucial Things to Consider in Creative Writing. ChaptersThe Main Elements of Prose Fiction. The Main Elements of Screenwriting and Stage Writing. The Essential Features of Poetry.Other Creative Writing Skills You Need to Know.Like all artistic endeavours, there is no one skill that creative writing demands. Rather, it is a collection of lots of different skills and elements that need to hang well together.Creating a compelling character, for example, is not the same skill as writing a beautiful description of a place or action. Nor is profundity and originality of thought the same as metrical fluency or ability to rhyme. All of the different elements of creative writing require different skills â" and to write a masterpiece they all need to coalesce, balance, and complement each other. A novel with a cracking plot can easily fall down if the characters arenât convincing, or if the writing style is clumsy or jarring. When you are writing your own work, fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, you will need to ensure that you practice all of the skills that you will need to make your work a marvellous whole. And that means cracking every single one of these main elements of creative writing. So, letâs take a look at what they are â" for your fiction writing, your poetry writing, and your playwriting. Whilst some elements are shared between forms, they feature in different ways.At the end, weâll take a look at three of the main skills that are relevant to all of the major forms of creative writing too. Find out more in our article, What is Creative Writing? Why not take a creative writing degree? Forms like the short story and the novel fall under this category, whereas prose texts such as the personal essay fall under the remit of creative nonfiction. In prose fiction, you are going to be wanting to create compelling character and engaging plots â" enabled by convincing dialogue strong descriptive writing when it is necessary.Character Development. Some people will tell you that character development is the mos t important element of novel writing. And they wouldnât necessarily be wrong.Characters are the things through which you propel your narrative forward, and they are vehicles through which you explore your theme. But they are more than that too: they are what make people remember books, they are what allow people to relate and empathise.Making time to think about who you want your characters to be is a crucial part of writing fiction.Plot Development. What is it that happens in your novel or piece of short fiction? A novel needs to have some forward motion, there needs to be some sort of events, conflicts, tensions, crises, and resolutions. Unless you are Samuel Beckett or Raymond Queneau, of course, who determinedly wrote books in which nothing happens.Despite this, there has to be a reason why your audience will keep reading. Plotting out the main events â" even if these are purely cerebral happenings â" can help you make sense of the structure of your fiction.Dialogue.Writing c onvincing dialogue in an age of realism is a notoriously difficult skill. Yet, it is one of the really crucial elements of effective fiction. The novelist, Will Self, has spoken of how, during his writing process, he would go to cafes just to listen to people talk. Listening carefully to the cadences of real speech enables you to render them well â" whilst banal imperatives like âwrite like you talkâ are never quite as easy as they seem.Whilst writing dialogue, think about whether the speech in your fiction needs to be directly spoken, or whether it can sit indirectly in your prose.Find out how to improve your creative writing! Want to write a novel? Try a creative writing course.Descriptive Writing.Another major feature of fiction writing is writing the scenes themselves, the flesh of the world that you are creating. And one of the most important writing techniques in this is knowing what actually needs to be said. What are people wearing and where do they live? What details does your audience need to know? What can you leave out without harm? Too much irrelevant information bogs down the flow of your piece. Finally, how are you going to write this? To learn how to write well â" in terms of the cadence, fluency, and sound of your sentences â" is just as important as everything else here. The Main Elements of Screenwriting and Stage Writing. Now, it is a little unfair here to collapse writing for screen and writing for stage. The professional writers among you will surely have something to say about this.Yet, the difference between writing a text to be read and a text to be heard is huge â" and if you are ju ggling both prose and drama, youâll need to keep this in your head the whole time. Good writing in theatre or film is not the same as good writing when you are writing a novel.Dialogue.Dialogue, of course, is the main element of these texts â" and you will need to hone your dialogue skills if you hope to stand a chance in the world of scriptwriting.A screenwriter and playwright needs to use dialogue in a different way. Dialogue is the action on stage â" as much as it is the character. And it is much more alive than it can possibly be in a book.Character.On stage or screen, there is no way to verbally describe a character as there is in a book. You can show them, yes, or you can reveal their nature through the things that they say.A creative writer therefore needs to feed details about their character through that characterâs own words, or through the words of other characters. The characters need to be more unified too â" as they donât have the markers that they can hide beh ind in novels.Check out our introduction to creative writing for more! The Essential Features of Poetry.Youâll see that creative writing courses split up those people interested in writing poetry from the writing program for novelists. This is because reading and writing poetry is completely different to writing fiction, or even drama: being a good novelist does not make you a good poet â" and vice versa. In a poetry workshop you will focus on completely different things than you would in a creative writing course for fiction or creative non-fiction. In poetry, language takes on a different form, a difference as large as that between travel writing and technical writing.Metre.If you are a poet yourself, you wonât need to be told that the crucial feature of poetry is metre and rhythm. Take a writing sample from any poet in the history of English and you will see that rhythm takes centre stage.Finding a way to write both naturally and within the confines of the form is the great ne gotiation that a poet has to make, so that metrical alertness becomes second nature within the creative process.Structure and Form. Are you going to write an ode or a sonnet, a ballad or a limerick? And how do you engage with the specificities of these forms once you have made that decision? Moreover, indeed, how have you made that decision, and why?As the very essence of a poem, the form is the thing that gives the poem sense. And according to your personal poetics, youâll give it that sense you feel most appropriate.Meaning and Symbolism. When we write poems, what happens to language? Does it become more compressed? More ambiguous? More symbolic, allusive, elusive?âMeaningâ in the conventional sense doesnât quite function in the same way. Language shimmers here, whilst it takes on much more of a solid form in a poem. What you are trying to say â" or what you want the poem to be â" matters. Someone's been busy with their creative writing...Other Creative Writing Skills You Need to Know. All of the above are elements that you will need to decide on with the form of your creative piece â" whether a prose poem or a selection of personal essays. However there are elements of creative writing that go unseen in the finished work. These are the processes of research, planning and editing, which hold the book together and bring it into existence.Research.Research is everything that happens to a text before it is written into words. It is the ideas, the inspirations, the considerations of style, the factual details and descriptive phrases that you need to pin down and be sure of.No novel is possible without research.Planning.Planning brings together the research with the framework you will create. How is one event or idea going to follow the next one? And why? And is that the best way to do it?Editing.Once you have finished your writing, you still have more writing to do. That wr iting is what we conventionally call editing.Find out about jobs in creative writing!

Free Textbook Market
Free Textbook Market Scott G. McNealy, the co-founder and former CEO of Sun Microsystems one of the largest sellers of server computers is launching an online hub for free textbooks and other course materials called Curriki, according to an article in The New York Times. Sun Microsystems was purchased by Oracle, a software manufacturer, in 2010. Curriki, a nonprofit organization, and many other organizations are building a trend of creating open-source, online versions of many existing textbooks. These online versions are much cheaper and sometimes free. Many traditional textbook publishers have been slightly modifying existing editions of textbooks and reselling basically the same version to increase profits. Textbook publishers have been doing so for years; however, this will soon end. We are spending $8 billion to $15 billion per year on textbooks in the United States, McNealy told The New York Times. It seems to me we could put that all online for free. Many of these open-source, online textbooks are written by retired, or groups of, retired teachers and professors. These retired teachers allow anyone to distribute these open-source textbooks in digital, printed, or audio format. Many schools and organizations are opening up to these textbooks. However, the process is not as simple as it may appear. The states of California and Texas are the two biggest consumers of textbooks because of their large student populations. Therefore, these open-source textbook creators are pushing to meet the requirements of these states. Most states have separate regulations for textbook usage. Both Texas and California have recently adjusted their textbook regulations to grant these open-source textbooks a fighting chance against the states arduous approval processes. The states are currently considering permitting these books. Other companies like Flat World Knowledge are competing against traditional textbook publishers at the college level. Flat World Knowledge has been giving select colleges free online versions of textbooks. Students can then buy a black-and-white version of the textbook for $30 or $60 for a color version, which is significantly cheaper than around the $200 mark that most traditional textbooks would cost. McNealy and other open-source textbook aficionados are still trying to garner enough support and money to bolster free or discounted open-source textbooks. However, these programs are becoming more credible, and it is expected that textbooks will become cheaper, and possibly free, eventually.

Students have been told to read the New York Times to improve their vocabulary for just about as along as the SAT has been in existence. While you may be tempted to tune out as soon as you hear New York Times, do yourself a favor and check out the 182 Questions to Write or Talk About section designed specifically for high school students. (https://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/13/182-questions-to-write-or-talk-about/ ). It contains interesting student opinion questions, like Is cheating getting worse? Do you think a healthier lunch program is a lost cause? and Is school designed more for girls than boys? with responses and opinions from students across the country. Each question is linked to a relevant New York Times article or opinion piece. When the article you are reading is an opinion piece, make notes about the argument the author is building and the techniques they use to strengthen their logic to help yourself prepare for the SAT writing section. You can also add your own responses to the online dialogue as a way to practice your writing skills. Play SAT Jeopardy. Jeopardy Labs (www.jeopardylabs.com) was created by an undergraduate student at Washington State as a platform to help students and teachers create their own online Jeopardy games. The site contains games created by previous users, like New SAT Math (https://jeopardylabs.com/play/new-sat-math) and SAT writing (https://jeopardylabs.com/play/sat-writing-jeopardy-3). You can play as a single player or you can play with friends for some friendly competition. Since one of the best ways to learn new information is to create materials yourself, consider creating your own Jeopardy games on this site based on practice test questions that youve found challenging. Read for Pleasure. Reading is one of the best things you can do to prepare for the SAT. The test itself entails reading long, dense passages that require extended focus and concentration. So, the more reading practice you have the better. In addition, many of the vocabulary words on the SAT can be found in moderately challenging non-fiction books. Pick a non-fiction book on a topic that you find interesting and dive in! As you come across unfamiliar words, look up their meaning online and make an effort to understand how they are used in context. Watch Educational Videos. Give yourself a break from reading by watching educational videos. Review your practice test results and identify a few areas where you need to improve your knowledge. Focus your video search on these topics. Most people will easily be distracted by fun, non-educational videos when they search on YouTube, so stay on task by searching on www.Hippocampus.org instead. This site contains links to an impressive collection of educational videos that cover almost every topic on the SAT. Study with Friends. If youre an extrovert and find it hard to stay motivated when you study alone, organize a study group with some of your most motivated friends. Use your study group time to play competitive games, like Jeopardy, or practice exercising and reviewing your writing skills. Quiz your friends on vocabulary and math facts using flashcards that you create yourself or find online. Just remember to carve out independent study time as well, especially for information that you need to rehearse and commit to memory. Preparing for the SAT takes time and commitment, but parts of the process can be fun! Do yourself a favor and dont wait until you are a couple of months away from the SAT to start some of these activities. Building your SAT reading, writing, and math skills over time will give you a big advantage in the long run. ABOUT DR. What is your view? Do you have a positive or negative outlook on the state of your countryâs economy for the year ahead?Letâs learn some vocabulary that expresses how we feel:Positive Outlook I am hopeful because Consumer confidence will be restored and public spending will increase.Investors will regain (recover) their faith in our market and resume manufacturing here. The local economy will be boosted by strong exports.Government cutbacks will start to take effect.Interest rates will be reduced.Restructuring of banks will help reduce their debts.Negative Outlook I am doubtful things will improve becauseâ¦The dollar remains high against local currency.Unemployment is now at record levels. A brain drain (emigration of new graduates) is causing young talent to leave the country because of the shortage of jobs.International markets have lost confidence in our currency and we might be forced into devaluation.
